HB 671 Tax administration; awards for detection of tax underpayments
This is the “Gestapo Bill." Tattle on your neighbor and get rewarded by your government.
I am shocked that this bill has already passed through 2 committees. Please tell the Delegates you do not approve of this bill.
A. In accordance with the provisions of this section, the Tax Commissioner is hereby authorized to award monetary compensation to individuals who provide information that leads to the successful collection of delinquent taxes owed by other individual or business taxpayers. Any amount payable under this section shall be paid from the proceeds of the taxes collected by reason of the information provided.
B. If the Tax Commissioner proceeds with any administrative or judicial action described in this chapter based on information brought to the Tax Commissioner's attention by an individual, such individual shall receive an award of 20 percent of the collected proceeds, including penalties, interest, additions to tax, and additional amounts, resulting from such action or from a settlement in response to such action.

Summary as introduced:
Tax administration; awards for detection of tax underpayments. Creates a program for the payment of monetary rewards to individuals who provide information to the Tax Commissioner that leads to the successful collection of taxes that are owed by other individual or business taxpayers. Awards may only be given if the underpaying individual taxpayer's income exceeds $100,000 or the underpaying business taxpayer's income exceeds $500,000, and the amount in question exceeds $50,000.
