I know we are all tired from the recently concluded elections. While Republicans had some success at the local level in the 3rd District, the overall results around the state were extremely disappointing. We continue to hope that Mark Obenshain is able to come back and win Attorney General to ensure we continue our 20-year Republican hold on that important office.
While it may seem like the elections just ended, there is an important special election going on right now in our neighboring 6th District that is being vacated by Ralph Northam.
In 2009 when Republicans swept the three statewide offices, Democrats immediately regained momentum by winning the special election for the Senate seat vacated by Ken Cuccinelli. This year, we need a win for Republicans to regain momentum after November 5, and the Northam seat is our chance to do it. It takes on added importance because control of the Senate rides on winning this seat. Republicans will lose our Senate majority in January unless we can win this special election. However, if we win, we can ease the gridlock in Richmond by having 21 Republican votes and not allowing the Senate Democrats to block critical votes like the budget and judicial appointments.
Republicans will nominate our candidate for the 6th District in a firehouse primary tomorrow night. Once we have our nominee, the hard work begins to get them elected. And we need your help.
This Saturday has been designated "Majority Saturday" and we are working to turn out volunteers from throughout the region to canvass, phone bank, and boost name ID for our newly-minted Republican nominee. Like the 3rd District, the 6th District includes part of South Hampton Roads in Norfolk and Virginia Beach, and part of the Middle Peninsula in Mathews County. It also includes the Eastern Shore of Virginia which I represented for my first ten years in the Senate. The 6th District is nearby and I want to invite you to come to the part of the district nearest to you on Saturday to assist us in our efforts.

This is an important special election with statewide implications for both parties. Governor-Elect McAuliffe has pledged to spend $1 million to keep the seat in Democrat hands. We must turn out to prove to him that his money is no match for our grassroots excitement and enthusiasm.
